Therefore the LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it, and in the middle of the garden God placed the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in order to test him, and the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die."

If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out. And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, where " 'their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.'

In fact, the place in which the phrase is found is in a private letter written by Jefferson to the Danbury Baptist Association to assure them that the Federal Government wouldn’t allow any denomination to be the Official United State Church. Ruby Ridge was the site of a violent confrontation and siege in northern Idaho in 1992.
